Top 3 Monitor Arm Configurations for The Command Center & Control Room

Focus Console Made By Sustema

At Sustema Inc. we specialize in manufacturing technical furniture, better know as “consoles”, for organizations operating in mission-critical environments. Such organizations include emergency communications centers (PSAP), air traffic command centers and network operation centers. We often get asked by our clients how to design the most ergonomic viewing angle for operators while mounting anywhere between 4–8 CPU monitors on each console. In such cases, many elements must be considered before considering purchasing a monitor arm. For instance, the number of monitors that will be required, the size & weight of the monitors, the dimensions of the work surface and even the length of the cables. Control room consoles are unique in their ability to accommodate multiple CPU monitors and manage all the cables/equipment simultaneously while giving operators a comfortable work environment. Therefore, since monitor arms are often integrated directly within the console, we will go over the best CPU monitor arm configurations for a 24/7 command center environment.

Slatwall Monitor Arm System

The Slatwall system is very popular for its ability to mount multiple CPU monitors and accessories often required by operators and technicians. These are easily accessible and help reduce clutter on the work surface. Another advantage of this system is that it can be mounted with several types of monitor arms (fixed, articulated, etc). If the monitor arms are fixed, they can be adjusted by simply mounting the arm higher or lower on the Slatwall. Accessories include shelves and holders for pencils, paper, files, cellphones, tablets, and headsets. However, unless the Slatwall is not mounted on the surface the console will not be able to integrate the height-adjustable function.

Telescopic Monitor Arm

For applications requiring multiple levels of CPU monitors, the telescopic monitor arm comes in handy as they can be shortened or extended horizontally to create a cockpit-style configuration. The monitor arms come attached to a heavy-duty pole and can be adjusted from the base to provide an ergonomic viewing angle. Furthermore, mounting the pole directly on the work surface enables the consoles to integrate the electric height-adjustable function. Operators are able then to alternate between a sitting and standing position throughout the day. At Sustema we also manufacture consoles with dual height adjustable surfaces to adapt the height of the CPU screens and work surface to each person.

Dynamic/Articulated Monitor Arm

Dynamic or articulated monitor arms can be adjusted to the desired height with a single hand movement. These can be mounted on a Slatwall, directly on the work surface or on a pole supporting two or more arms simultaneously. The arm is designed to manage power and data cables along its structure to help reduce clutter on the surface.
